ROLE-PLAYING (RPing) ON TLS

TLS is a role-playing (RPing) an Player Kill (PKing) MUD with RP based upon Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time (WoT) novels.

Below are some helpful hints to guide new players through their first few days at TLS.

1) Character History

Characters do not materialize out of a void.  They should have a background, family, attitude, mannerism, stature, appearance occupation and have a desired RP. Before you create a character, skim through the books, the glossaries are a great place to start.  Draft your history out before you create your character.

Your character history is not static, so be sure and modify it as you gain levels, skills and familiarity with the MUD and join a guild.

There are a couple commands that help you do this:

  1. title - places a OOC title next to you name on the wholist (accessed by typing 'who').
  2. description - allows you to type a paragraph that describes your looks, clothing, weapons, stature, etc.
  3. ictitle - allows players in the room to see what you are in character.
Note: Please keep OOC titles to the title command.

Players and ADMIN at TLS are VERY helpful so do not be afraid to ask others for help!  In fact,  this is encouraged!

2) You are almost always in character (IC)

99% of the time your character will be IC.  There are several ways to be out-of-character (OOC). There is an OOC talk channel  which players use to chat about anything that is not IC, talk about their day, ask OOC related questions, etc.   DO NOT ask for equipment, skills,  or character restores.  DO NOT use this channel to insult, slander or abuse any player.  The consequences will be determined by the IMMORTALS.

OSAY is a command used to say something OOCly to people in the same room as you.

The question/answer channel is OOC and should be used to ask help from other players about skills, spells, and other MUD related questions.

3) RP RP RP.

In real life (IRL) you would never walk up to a stranger and ask them for gold.  If they didn't have you arrested, they'd probably shoot you.  That may very well happen here too. Since the MUD code places a players name in front of their appearance , you may forget that you really don't know their name.  ICly, you would only know them as their  appearance reads.  You may look at them to see their description as well.

When encountering or attempting to interact with a player, greet them first!  E.g., Greetings in the Light, or G'morn to ya kind lass...

4) Guilds and subguilds

There are many guilds on TLS and there are various requirements to join, but they all center around RP.  It is suggested that you learn all about the guild that you'd like to join, before joining it.  Learning about guilds is a great way to develop your RP.  Try and discover who the guildleaders and recruiters are, talk to guild members and determine if a guilds philosophy fits into your RP.

5)Notes

TLS has an excellent note editor.

There are 7 posting areas:

  1. Public - notes addressed to everyone and general in contact.
  2. News - announcement about RP opportunities or event such as a Coronation for the Queen of Andor or a Costume Ball.
  3. Ideas - the place to put any suggestions you have for the mud. Please write these notes in a positive, productive tone.
  4. Guild - where guild notes are posted.  These include rp engagement, recruiting announcements, etc.
  5. Stories - where players post:  WoT related stories, stories about how they discovered they could touch the True Source, etc.
  6. Announcements - the IMMORTAL board where you will find announcements about code changes, new rules, etc.
  7. Permanent - only post here if you want the note to be permanent.

To learn more about notes, when you are on the MUD, type 'help note'.   Or Click Here

Above all, remember that you are here for fun, not to make the lives of other players miserable.
